Doctor Dyslexia Dude: An entrepreneurial spirit

Dear members of the Doctor Dyslexia Dude Community,

As entrepreneurs we never stop learning and exploring. Our newest update includes earning first and second place in two different pitch competitions!

 

Two years ago on November 17th, 2020, we participated in a pitch event that included Outagamie, Winnebago and Fond du Lac Counties in Wisconsin.  

 

We were then invited to the NEW Launch Alliance HATCH Event, held virtually on December 3rd, 2020. Then, we were one of two business invited to pitch again at the New North Summit in 2022 at Lambeau Field in Green Bay Wisconsin. Here is the link our pitch presentations. 

 

Doctor Dyslexia Dude, LLC also participated in Project Pitch which is known as the one place in Wisconsin where Entrepreneurship + Education + Entertainment = Inspiration! The outcome of the pitch will be aired on Saturday, May 28 at 5pm on WBAY-TV 2 and be repeated on Saturday, July 23 at 5pm. If you miss it there, you can watch it on their website at a later point. 

                                                           

Participating in these pitch competitions has taught us the importance of having confidence in our VISION. Our mission at Doctor Dyslexia Dude, LLC is to continue to change the narrative for students in Special Education, especially those with dyslexia. We are inspired by our students, and our commitment to helping students follow their dreams through supportive educational opportunities. 

 

We continue to develop partnerships with local businesses and organizations to further our work. We have received funding from the Institute for Business and Entrepreneurship – University of Wisconsin System and the Greater Oshkosh Economic Development Corporation.

Learning to Read – The Key That Opened The Door

As a young kid, I had always struggled with reading and avoided it at all cost. Reading should be an activity that one does for pleasure and opens their mind to endless dreams. However, reading was not an activity I enjoyed. I was engaged in behaviors that were destructive in order to avoid it. I had to attend an alternative program for two years of high school because I could not control my temper. I was angry for many reasons, but the main one was that I was not able to read.   I was not diagnosed until the age of 18 and graduated from high school reading at an elementary level. My options were very limited. Yet, my life changed in 1996 when my mentor, an angel, Dr. Robert T. Nash literally saved my life and gave me HOPE as a student who was in Special Education. Balancing Resources for Literacy: How Policy Impacts Literacy Quality and Modern Illiteracy Rates

The Science of Reading (SoR) has become a central focus in education, emphasizing evidence-based practices for teaching literacy skills. However, alongside these instructional methods, the role of policy in shaping literacy outcomes is often overlooked.  Understanding how resources—both public and private—are allocated can shed light on why certain literacy disparities persist, even with advances in the SoR.  This piece explores the balance of resources and inequities through the lens of the equation  LQ = R {Pub + Priv (M)} - I , which highlights how policy decisions impact literacy quality and modern-day illiteracy rates.
